How do you know if it's the clutch on a AC compressor on a car or the compressor itself?

Making noise from the compressor after spray car wash engine. It was before but now alot worse. I Liquid wrench spray clutch and shaft, and quieted for a while, but back. Estimate for compressor change $600-800. Just clutch I maybe able to do self. 98 taurus With darn DOHC that is crammed in the engine compartment to where the have to drop sub frame just to get to compressor.
